Eish Digital yesterday unveiled its new apps in conjunction with its partner, UK-based digital publisher YUDU.
This partnership offers a tool for African businesses, governments and marketing departments to create a first impression in the new media market through the use of interactive apps.
YUDU claims to be one of the world's largest e-publishers and offers a multi-platform publishing solution to businesses, with partners around the world. The YUDU digital platform has serviced corporate customers such as Virgin Holidays, Readers Digest and Guinness World Book of Records.
YUDU has been around for 10 years, operating in 75 countries, and has about 750 live apps, with over five million downloads, and aims to publish about 1 200 pages daily.
Eish Digital focuses on magazines, e-books, catalogues and corporate communications.
Speaking at the app launch, director of Eish Digital, Gail Parrish, said that with the immense growth of apps and tablets all over the world, Africa and SA decided to become part of the journey through the YUDU platform.
"The reason why it's actually called YUDU is because you can do it yourself. Instead of going and paying millions to have an app created, we can give you an off-the-shelf branded app within two weeks, with about 40 to 50 functionalities that are already built into it that you can go live with and start communicating with your client," added Parrish.
Local apps
Some of the apps on display at the launch included RMB WineX, which details exhibitors, wine varietals and the floor plan.
The Norman Goodfellows app shows the latest offers on wine, spirits, malts and soft drinks, and news and information from the liquor store.
Eish Digital has also developed an app for Management Today Magazine, as well as a catalogue for the Internet Show.
An app currently under construction is the My Wedding App, which allows photographers, wedding cake makers, dress makers and other wedding industry players to advertise their services with images, descriptions and imbedded videos.
Educational need
YUDU recently launched YUDU Education, the first digital textbook publishing platform enabling educational publishers to digitise and deliver multimedia textbooks for universal access on a tablet, laptop and desktop computer.
YUDU Education also allows students and instructors/teachers to annotate, bookmark and take clippings of content, and integrate supplemental materials, which are then instantly synchronised to the YUDU cloud for access on any device.
YUDU CEO Richard Stephenson believes the power of apps can leapfrog physical education boundaries in Africa and SA.
"It's difficult to get textbooks and learning materials to all the different places where infrastructure isn't that great. Mobile technology can leapfrog all the old-style European technologies and we can get learning materials into schools and we can give everybody the opportunity for a first class education," he added.
