MultiChoice's online video-on-demand (VOD) service, DStv BoxOffice Online, will not be available by the end of this year as initially projected.
digital satellite television operator unveiled its movie rental service, DStv BoxOffice, for its premium subscribers in July. The VOD service allows subscribers to access pre-loaded movies via their personal video recorders.
At the time, MultiChoice revealed the next step would be to take the service online. “The next phase of the BoxOffice roll-out will be an online offering, available to all South African broadband users by the end of this year.”
However, citing the process of trial and assessment as a reason, MultiChoice says the anticipated launch of BoxOffice Online has been postponed. “We are still busy with testing. The launch has now been scheduled for first quarter 2012.”
MultiChoice says its online offering will initially include a limited beta service, which will be followed by a full commercial launch, at an as yet unspecified time.
“As communicated previously, this service will be available to all South African consumers.”
The company says more information will be released to the public at the time of the launch next year.
