The Congress of South African Trade Unions' (Cosatu's) drive-slow protest against government's open road tolling scheme is going ahead as planned this morning.
The union will stage the protest in Ekurhuleni today, following clearance from the High Court, in Johannesburg, yesterday.
Last Friday, the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court dismissed Cosatu's application to protest on city highways.
Cosatu's Gauteng provincial chairperson, Phutas Tseki, says the protest will take place along the planned routes and traffic on the N3, N12, R24 and R21 would be severely affected.
About 200 police and metro cars lined the starting point next to the Hatfield Stadium this morning, says Tseki.
By 9am, more than 100 protestors had arrived, he says, with the number expected to increase to around 400 throughout the day.
Tseki says, as per the High Court's ruling, the protest will take place until 3pm.
This follows the passing of the "e-toll Bill" - or Transport and Related Matters Amendment Bill - last week. The Bill paves the way for e-tolling to come into effect.
