A 32-year-old Johannesburg man has been found guilty of malicious damage to property for loading malicious software onto the Edgars head office mainframe in 1999.
Local media reports say the man, Berend Howard of Morningside Manor, was charged with loading malicious software onto the mainframe at Edgardale.
Edcon says the act affected 700 stores and took a team of 30 people to rectify. The group says losses are estimated at R20 million.
The court heard that Howard - a temporary Edcon employee - had a grudge against the group because it outsourced its IT and support function.
Edcon spokesmen could not be reached for further comment at the time of publication. Evidence in mitigation of sentence will be heard on 29 July.
