Duxbury Networking has launched a new line-up of Security Threat Management (STM) products from its principal Netgear, designed to deliver levels of security and performance to small and medium-sized businesses that were, up to now, associated with the enterprise.
The STM Series of Web and e-mail appliances is introduced under Netgear's ProSecure brand. It combines best-of-breed security features with patent-pending 'stream scanning' technology, according to Andy Robb, chief technology officer at Duxbury Networking.
“It provides the SME with an enterprise-class Web and e-mail protection solution that is simple and affordable, yet capable of acting against rapidly evolving Internet-based threats,” he says.
“SMEs face the same Web and e-mail threats as enterprises, so they require the same level of protection. However, SMEs don't have the same in-house expertise and budgets as enterprises, so solutions aimed at them need to be cost-effective and simple to deploy.”
Robb says delivering a solution that meets these criteria is challenging. “In order to meet profit margin requirements, other vendors targeting SMEs often use 'watered down' anti-spam engines that require laborious on-site tuning, or anti-virus engines that contain only limited signature databases.
“They might also opt for weak detection algorithms that respond slowly to new threats or are not optimised for real-time Web traffic.
“Enterprise-class technologies differ from cheaper solutions by protecting all of a particular threat type as opposed to covering only a small subset of it. However, these technologies are often processor-hungry and require expensive hardware to run effectively,” he adds.
Netgear's STM family of appliances resolves this problem with its Web-optimised 'stream scanning' architecture. As the foundation on which the STM Series is built, this technology enables the use of enterprise-class detection techniques while maintaining high throughput.
Netgear has also partnered with Kaspersky Lab and Commtouch to bring best-in-class Web and e-mail scanning technology engines to the STM platform. Running on top of the stream scanning platform, these engines work in parallel with the Netgear heuristics engine to protect against known and unknown threats.
