A press and analyst summit to commemorate 40 years of Ethernet innovation kicked off in San Francisco on Tuesday.

The event comes 40 years to the day after Ethernet co-founder Bob Metcalfe sketched a diagram of the networking technology concept, launching a transformation in human communication.

Welcoming attendees to the summit, Steve Hoover, CEO of the Palo Alto Research Centre (PARC), noted that the event will explore how Ethernet created the communication environment we live in today. The event will promote conversations about innovation and explore how we can embrace this in the evolution of networking, he added.

The event is being held in association with PARC, the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) and the Computer History Museum in Mountain View. The Computer History Museum will serve as the venue for an innovation conference, a 40th Birthday gala dinner and a NetEvents day of debates and discussions with industry leaders.

Speakers at the event include Metcalfe and Ethernet con-founder Dave Boggs, as well as MEF president Nan Chen.

Briefings scheduled over the two-day event will feature insights from analysts and the technology press from over 30 countries around the globe. Attendees can expect to hear about the evolution of Ethernet, including "war stories" from the early years, as well as discussions on current trends and future innovations in networking.

At the summit, industry experts will explore Ethernet innovation, with a focus on enterprise networking, cloud computing, virtualisation, and telecoms.
