The world's largest social network officially has over three million businesses actively advertising on the platform, up 50% since the same time last year.
Facebook says the majority of these businesses are small to medium enterprises (SMEs) and 70% are from outside the US.
More than 50 million SMEs use Facebook Pages. "Facebook is the bridge to the new mobile economy for small business, helping them communicate with customers anytime, anywhere. More than one billion people on Facebook are connected to at least one business," the company said in a statement.
Most companies on Facebook fall into the services, local commerce, or e-commerce categories. SMEs are using Facebook Pages on the go, with more than a million advertisers creating ads directly from a mobile device.
Last month, Facebook reported its photo-sharing app Instagram had attracted more than 200 000 advertisers since opening advertising last June. Last year, Instagram surpassed 400 million users.
By comparison, Twitter, which began selling advertisements more than five years ago, has 130 000 advertisers and 320 million users.
