Facebook filters memories

Facebook will allow users to add date and people filters to their On This Day memories - preventing bad memories from resurfacing every year.

In March, Facebook added the On This Day feature as a way for users look back at old photographs and memories that have been shared since up to the social network.

Once signed up, it sends a notification every day to tell users what happened on their Facebook page; from a year to eight years ago (even longer if the person was a very early Facebook user). 'Memories' include status updates, people you became friends with that day, and photos.

The social network did not take into account that there are certain days (like the day a loved one died) or people (past romances) that users do not necessarily want to be reminded of.

The new preference options solve this. The feature is rolling out today and may not be accessible to all users yet. Once on the On This Day page, users can enable this feature by clicking preferences in the top right-hand corner, next to notifications.

"Your memories are yours, so you should control which ones you see in On This Day," reads the pop-up message. "Let us know if there are specific people or dates that you'd rather not be reminded of in On This Day."
