Fiji gets speed browsing
Even a paradise like Fiji needs a high-speed mobile Internet, it seems. So Vodafone Fiji has just acquired Acision's Speed Browsing and Easy MMS/picture messaging technology, according to The Inquirer.
Previously, these two mobile services had been routed via the Vodafone Australia network. So the expense of long-lining content through sub-sea cabling had limited the amount of content available to Fijian subscribers.
A culturally diverse location like Fiji has broad recreational interests, ranging from Bollywood films to rugby. So it's easy to see why speeding up mobile Internet browsing makes sense.
Alert system benefits parents
Whether it's an emergency event, a school closing due to weather conditions, an update of an event or a reminder for a special activity, parents of students in northwest Missouri now have the chance to receive that information straight from their cellphones, reports Maryville Daily Forum.
Sponsored by Northwest Missouri Cellular TextCaster, the service alerts subscribers in a matter of moments, when a variety of events occur. In addition to emergency messages, schools may also use the system to broadcast other news like closings, early dismissals and other school bulletins.
Sixteen schools throughout northwest Missouri have begun using text messaging technology offered through TextCaster.
Banks test text security
Banks and brokerages have been on the hunt for just the right way to boost log-on and transaction security for customers, says CNN Money.
They seek the perfect balance of convenience and cost. But that has proved to be a moving target as times and technologies change. So consumers might see an array of alternatives pop up over the next couple years.
E-Trade Financial ETFC, Charles Schwab SCHW and others have started offering customers key-fob-size tokens to boost log-on safety. Users who opt for these can then only access their accounts online by typing in an up-to-the-minute passcode that the token displays. This basically bars identity thieves from getting into accounts, even if they have an account's user name and regular password.
