First National Bank (FNB) has reduced its pricing on certain iPhone models for new and existing customers who sign up for the devices during the month of August.

This comes the month before Apple is expected to launch its latest flagship phone, the iPhone 6.

The offer ranges from R279 per month (over 24 months) for the iPhone 5C (16GB) model, to R499 for the high-end iPhone 5S (64GB) model. FNB hopes its latest deals will make the device more obtainable because it is paid off, along with fees, over two years.

FNB's smartphone and tablet offer was introduced in October 2011, as part of the bank's strategy to drive cashless payments and banking.

At the time, the bank estimated there were about eight million smartphones in circulation in SA. Three years down the line, this number has at least doubled, according to World Wide Worx.

This morning, FNB said SA's smartphone user base was still growing rapidly, noting it is estimated there will be around two million new smartphone users by the end of 2014. "This rapid pace of technology and mobile advancement means that whether by choice or necessity, consumers are connected to the world through a smart device."

Kartik Mistry, FNB's head of smart devices, says the bank aims to unlock this world of connectivity for customers - "particularly so that they are able to bank digitally 24 hours a day, seven days a week".

He says, by cutting the monthly fee on the iPhone - one of the bank's top sellers - a broader customer base will have access to the aspirational Apple device.
