Worldwide end-user wide area network (WAN) and Internet access service expenditures could grow 24% to $109 billion by 2007, according to a new study by international research company Infonetics Research.
"WAN bandwidth and route control are hot right now, because organisations see those technologies as a way to optimise network use and avoid costly downtime," says Jeff Wilson, executive director of Infonetics Research.
"More than half of the study respondents with WAN access plan to use bandwidth and route control by 2005."
The report said two factors prompting respondents to increase their WAN bandwidth were increased WAN use by existing users and sites, and the addition of bandwidth-hungry applications like multimedia applications and enterprise resource planning.
Another market trend was for spending on leased-line and frame relay to account for 94%, on average, of all Internet service expenditures, with digital subscriber line coming in second at 5% and broadband cable third at 1%.
