Free up telecoms - Busa

Business Unity SA (Busa) says there must be more competition in the telecoms space to aid SA in reaching its growth targets.

Busa yesterday outlined business's high-level reaction to the growth plan, welcoming government's aims to speed up economic growth, but pointing out that decisive action must be taken.

CEO Jerry Vilakazi says: “The time for talk is over, the time for diagnosing what the problems are; we have diagnosed them before, it's time for implementation.”

Among the points raised by Busa is a lack of competition within the telecoms sector. Economic director Simi Siwisa says: “We have not yet fully realised the potential of IT in SA and Africa.”

Siwisa explains more competition, and enabling the private sector to play a larger role in the sector, will result in lower prices and improved delivery. A lack of competition, she says, is a “stumbling block to growth”.

Increased competition would also aid SA in growing the economy, because new businesses would be able to start up, and call costs in the business process outsourcing sector would come down, says Siwisa.
