A Google University will be held two days before the Tech4Africa technology conference starts in SA.
As part of the Web and emerging technology conference, Sarah Blake, head of optimisation at local online marketing agency Quirk eMarketing, will host the Google University on 10 and 11 August.
“The Google University will instruct delegates on the finer points of Google Analytics and how to leverage this free and powerful tool for Web site reporting,” says Quirk.
Blake will also demonstrate how to use Google AdWords to drive more traffic to a Web site.
“Every business owner could afford to know a bit more about search engine marketing, the umbrella term encompassing those engagement tactics that involve the use of search engines,” says Quirk.
It says learning how to optimise Web sites, so they rank highly on search engines, is key to increasing traffic to those sites and attracting potential customers.
Showcasing SA
“I don't think we can overstate the importance of education, especially where our tertiary education is not equipping graduates with the skills needed in these areas,” says Blake.
Quirk says one of the big questions the conference is set to raise is whether it is possible to create a global digital business in Africa.
Based in Cape Town, with satellite branches in London and Johannesburg, Quirk says it has reversed the typical global business model. “Quirk is in the business of showcasing South African creativity and technological know-how to the rest of the world, rather than the other way around.”
Starting 12 August, the main focus areas of the conference will be emerging technology and trends for Africa, applications for Web 2.0 in Africa, mobile and wireless innovation and trends for the next three years, cloud computing and it's relevance for business in Africa, start-ups and business opportunities in Africa, African success stories, and the funding landscape in Africa, according to the Web site.
