Google test 2D bar codes

In keeping with its aim to capture larger markets through innovation and technology, Google is testing a new feature on its Print Ads platform - 2D bar codes, reports AccuraCast.

By using 2D bar code and QR-code technology, Google is trying to facilitate business deals between consumers and vendors.

The 2D bar codes are added to Google Print Ads, which can be published in newspapers, magazines, buses, signboards, flyers etc. In addition to the traditional contact details printed on the ads, the 2D bar codes can provide more details about the advertiser in a small space.

Smart cards outwit puffing teens

The Tobacco Institute of Japan has started accepting applications for taspo age-verification cards to be used at cigarette vending machines, starting in March, says Daily Yomiuri Online.

Vending machines with the age verification function will be phased in from March to July, and smokers will have to use the IC card to purchase cigarettes.

From July, all 520 000 cigarette vending machines in the nation will require the card, which also can be used as an electronic money card to buy cigarettes from vending machines.

Premier says no

Victorian Premier John Brumby has refused to endorse the letting of the tender for Victoria's new public transport smart card, according to the Herald Sun.

Brumby yesterday declined five times to directly answer whether he was happy with the tendering process for the $500 million card.

His reluctance to endorse the controversial decision to award the card to Keane's Kamco consortium comes as the Herald Sun revealed a string of probity problems identified by investigators in the auditor-general's office, but not reported to Parliament by Auditor-General Des Pearson.
