The African National Congress (ANC) has distanced itself from a series of embarrassing links placed on its Web site, but admits it was not prepared for the attack.
In a statement released yesterday, the party said adverts on its Web site - offering services such as free porn, penis enlargement, tarot, reverse mortgage, security system report, jet charter, a dating service and Web site promotion - had nothing to do with the ANC. The party said the adverts appeared after someone hacked into the ANC site.
“We did not place the content and have no relation with the person that hacked into our Web site to embarrass the ANC,” the statement noted.
Spokesman Brian Sokutu said an investigation into the links would be opened this morning and added the party should have been equipped.
“This is the first time something like this has happened on the Web site. The Web site should not have been vulnerable and we should have been better prepared. But this is the first time something like this has happened and now we can work on determining who and what was behind it,” he said.
The Web site - www.anc.org.za - was designed and is hosted by Unwembi, which also counts the ANC Youth League, the Department of Health, the South African Secret Service and the Special Investigating Unit as part of its client base.
Sokutu declined to say whether the ANC blamed the attack on inadequate security and said any action would only be taken once the investigation is complete.
“The investigation will be extensive. It will look into technology and vulnerability of the Web site, among other things, and we will find ways to improve on this,” he said.
