IBM has announced that its new zEnterprise BC12 (zBC12) mainframe is now available in SA, offering twice the capacity as its predecessor, at a price point starting at under R2 million.

Maurice Blackwood, IBM systems and technology group director for SA, says the new zBC12, running on Linux, is uniquely positioned to meet the growing needs of South African enterprises, to cost-effectively, securely and efficiently run their systems while also positioning themselves to take advantage of new technologies.

Blackwood was speaking on the sidelines of the IBM zEnterprise Executive Forum in Johannesburg on Tuesday. The event showcased the additions to IBM's zEnterprise portfolio, including the IBM zEnterprise BC12, new innovations for the IBM zEnterprise EC12, new releases of z/OS and z/VM, and new industry solutions and capabilities supporting cloud, analytics, mobile and security.

Deon Newman, VP of IBM System z Marketing, noted that mobile, social, analytics and cloud computing are reinventing the way in which enterprises engage with customers. The need for enterprises to address these priorities in an efficient and cost-effective way informed IBM's investment in developing the latest System z solutions, says Newman.

"The Z in zEnterprise stands for zero," says Newman. "As in zero downtime and zero hackability." These areas, he says, are of increasing importance to enterprises in SA. "Security is becoming increasingly critical, as is 100% availability.

In addition, total cost of ownership is a key consideration for enterprises. With zEnterprise solutions, enterprises are able to reduce their total cost of ownership on an 'incredibly efficient platform', and embrace new technologies such as cloud computing and mobility, he says.
