ICT in govt takes centre stage

The fifth annual International ICT in Government Summit, focusing on the theme "Using ICT to enhance government delivery", is scheduled to take place at the Sandton Convention Centre on 24 and 25 February.

Hosted by Forge Ahead, the summit will look at the involvement of the private sector, government institutions and parastatals, and analyse the relationships, support, services provided, and future trends in the utilisation of information and communications technology (ICT) in government.

Mavuso Msimang, CEO of the State IT Agency (SITA), will deliver the keynote address - celebrating 10 years of democratic ICT.

Specific topics that will be discussed at the conference include "IT - building blocks to preventing cybercrime", "alternative funding models - overcoming budgetary constraints", "feasibility of open source and Linux", "bridging the skills divide" and "the ins and outs of the SITA Act".

Other topics include e-Gateway and the value of creating a digitised nation, public private partnerships (PPPs) and how PPPs can financially enable public sector service delivery, convergence and improving productivity, supporting mobility and saving money.

A number of high-level guest speakers will also be present, including Novell`s country manager, Stafford Masie, acting director-general of the Department of Communications, Pakamile Pongwana, Futureworld director Aletha Ling and GM of the communications department, Devan Naidoo.

Approximately 200 delegates from national, provincial and local government as well as private sector ICT companies are expected to attend.

There will also be a number of high-level delegates from African nations, including Namibia, Malawi, Botswana, Nigeria and Mozambique, as well as a Canadian delegation, consisting of both government officials and private sector delegates.
