IndigoCube brings Agile software guru Ambler to SA

Johannesburg, 24 Mar 2009

IndigoCube, South Africa's leading ALM (application life cycle management) company, is to host Scott W Ambler, a global authority on Agile software development, at two talks on 1 and 2 April, in Sandton, and co-host him with DVT on 3 April in Cape Town.

Ambler's presentation will provide an overview of Agile software development, share data from recent industry surveys as to the adoption rate and success rate of Agile techniques, and explore scaling issues such as distributed development teams, regulatory compliance, governance, large teams, complex environments, enterprise issues, cultural challenges, and leveraging legacy assets.

"Scott will share vital information and insights with local companies," says Themi Themistocleous, executive chairman of IndigoCube. "Our market research shows that many companies today are experiencing the same problems they did 30 years ago by, introducing techniques and methodologies that they have not managed to translate effectively into their organisations. Scott's presentation - Agility@scale - will give them both a broad overview of how and where Agile supports their development efforts and also a granular deconstruction of what works and why."

"Many organisations have dabbled with Agile software development techniques and now want to take Agile to the next level," says Ambler. "However, they're discovering that simple methodologies such as Scrum aren't sophisticated enough to address the complex situations that result. Once you go beyond the Agile rhetoric, you will find that you can, in fact, scale it to address real-world situations."

Ambler's presentation delivers overviews of disciplined Agile development strategies, including requirements envisioning, evolutionary architecture, risk-based milestones, independent parallel testing, and many more. It will also give insight into the full Agile life cycle and proven strategies for adopting Agile techniques successfully and allow attendees to discover "why there's a bit more to succeeding at Agile software development than taking a two-day master certification course".

Ambler is employed by IBM Software Group as practice leader - Agile development, and consults primarily in the US and Europe. He entered the IT industry in the mid-80s, and has authored several books and white papers on object-oriented software development, software process, Agile Model Driven Development, Agile Database Techniques, the Agile Unified Process, and the Enterprise Unified Process. He is a regular public speaker, writes copious columns and articles for several publications, maintains several blogs and mailing lists about how to scale Agile software development, is a fellow of the International Association of Software Architects, an Eclipse Process Framework committee member, and a Jolt Judge.

* The event is being held from 8.30 for 9am to 12pm at IBM's auditorium, 70 Rivonia Street, in Sandton, on 1 and 2 April, and in Cape Town on the 3rd at the Sports Science Institute Auditorium, Boundary Road, Newlands.
