Inmon teaches DW 2.0

At a recent Africa conference sponsored by the E-com Institute, Bill Inmon held training sessions for DW 2.0 certification.

Dubbed 'the father of warehousing', Inmon said: "I was involved from the first time the words ' warehousing' (DW) were spoken. And DW is now in a state of being mission-critical to organisations."

According to Inmon, DW took a while to be widely accepted and was driven by business needs, rather than IT.

However, Inmon felt the biggest issue today is the confusion that surrounds the concept. "There has been major dispute around DW and what it is exactly. Because of this, I have created a framework (DW 2.0) under trademark protection to ensure that businesses do not abuse the term."

Inmon said some of the guidelines that define DW 2.0 include the recognition that data has its own life cycle within a warehouse, that DW should contain both structured and unstructured data, and touches upon the fact that metadata is an integral part of the DW environment.

In addition, DW 2.0 includes the notion of online high-performance data that can be updated, reference master data, profile data records, and contains continuous time span data.

In conclusion, Inmon stated DW architects have the second highest paying jobs, after SAP engineers.
