Intel upgrades notebook screens

Intel's Calpella-class Centrino 2 notebooks will run on an embedded DisplayPort system, which replaces the current low-voltage differential signalling technology, reports APC.

DisplayPort is also being positioned as the successor to visual interface for connections between a PC and a desktop display or home theatre system.

“We're now shifting that over to DisplayPort, which runs off a lower voltage and has a shorter voltage swing,” explains Jeff LeGassick, Intel product marketing manager.

Dell releases the Inspiron Mini 12

Dell has added the Inspiron Mini 12 to its Inspiron Mini family of netbooks, says Notebookreview.

The Mini 12 features a standard 12.1-inch WXGA display, Windows Vista Home Basic, built-in Web cam, Intel Atom processors, 1GB of RAM and a choice of 60GB or 80GB hard drive.

Services and add-on options for customers will include access to the Dell support centre, DellConnect Remote Assistance and DellDock .

Graphics chip market grows

Shipments of graphics processing units (GPUs) grew 22.5% compared to a year ago, marking the largest increase in six years, reports Venturebeat.

The big three graphics vendors - Intel, Advanced Micro Devices and Nvidia - took market share from the smallest three - Matrox, SiS, and VIA/S3 - but every vendor showed an increase in shipments.

Overall, desktop GPUs rose 4.7% to 61.9 million units and notebook GPUs grew by almost 40% to 49.4 million units, a sales boost attributed to recent releases by AMD and Nvidia.
