The release of Apple's latest operating system (OS) last night generated a significant increase in traffic on networks, causing disruptions to digital subscriber lines (DSL) throughout SA, according to Afrihost.
Apple on Wednesday released iOS8 with new features and updates, just two days ahead of the release of two new iPhone versions showcased last week.
Afrihost's DSL service suffered what the Internet service provider (ISP) labelled "medium impact" disruptions throughout the day today, a problem the company says it anticipates will be alleviated over the next few days.
In the meantime, the ISP has requested that users download the iOS8 update after 11pm, to free up capacity for everyone on the network.
"Afrihost and MTN have prioritised business traffic as far as possible, but due to the sheer number of users downloading iOS8, the network is extremely busy."
Afrihost offered its apologies to affected customers, and says it will "be optimising [its] network and making changes where applicable to provide the best possible Internet experience to clients while traffic demand remains high".
MTN SA, the country's second-largest cellular provider, announced in June that it had bought 50% and one share in Afrihost.
At the time, MTN said the deal would add scale to MTN SA's online ICT service offering, which is focused on the consumer and small and medium enterprise market.
