Unified threat management company Fortinet acquired IP Locks on 17 June, adding database-related vulnerability assessment and monitoring and auditing capabilities to its existing services.

"A large majority of threats are now internal, with some studies citing them to be attributable to as much as 78% of total threats in an organisation," explained Scott Reynolds, senior system engineer at IP Locks, at a recent media briefing at US Commercial Services in Illovo.

"IP Locks focuses on this internal threat as part of Fortinet's 'FortiDefend'," he said. "We help protect systems at database level by scanning for weaknesses and irregularities."

Amir Lubashevsky, director at Magix Integration, said, "Protecting data is much more complex than just looking from an information security perspective."

He cited the example of how a single USB drive can have enough space to copy an entire organisation's database.

"Devices have never been properly controlled, especially not from a human aspect. People are generally trusted," he explained.

Although Lubashevsky believes having controls in place is very important, he urges companies to maintain a good, fair balance between control and trust.

"Some companies just disallow everything. Too much control can conflict with productivity. A company needs to design a policy that will help the organisation, and not impede it," he concluded.
