iPhone pwns gaming
Apple's bet on cellphone software appears to be paying off, says The Wall Street Journal.
In the month since Apple opened an online software clearinghouse called the App Store, users have downloaded more than 60 million programs for the iPhone,
While most of those applications were free, Apple sold an average of $1 million a day in applications for a total of about $30 million in sales over the month.
Xbox hits big screen
Cineplex Entertainment and Xbox are bringing the Xbox 360 gaming experience to the big screen in surround sound exclusively at select Cineplex Entertainment theatres across Canada, says Market Watch.
Gamers will be able to experience their favourite Xbox 360 games on the big screen outside of regular movie showtimes.
Pricing for a two-hour private gaming session for up to twelve people is $179 plus applicable taxes and includes the use of Xbox 360 and four wireless controllers.
Game sales jump 28%
Even in a seasonally slow month and with the economy in the doldrums, US sales of video game hardware and software soared 28% in July, hitting $1.19 billion, says The Associated Press.
According to data from market researcher NPD Group, Americans bought $446.9 million worth of video game hardware during the month, a 17% jump from the same month a year ago.
The portable Nintendo DS was the top-selling gaming system with 608 400 units, followed by the Wii at 555 000.
