IS link goes down

The Solutions (IS) link between Rosebank and the Dimension Bryanston campus went down this morning, leaving online businesses, among them Ananzi.co.za MD Mark Bawulda, fuming over lost business.

According to Marius Swart, IS escalation executive, the 155MB microwave link (supplied by Sentech) between Rosebank and Bryanston went down at 9.10am due to a faulty uninterruptible power supply (UPS).

The access service clients were directly affected, but IS contends that frame relay and MPLS services were unaffected as they were routed over the two 34MB lines supplied by Telkom.

"The UPS that went down was basically blowing smoke. We have isolated it and the service is up and running, we are just doing some final checks," Swart says.

Buwalda says Mondays are particularly busy times for Ananzi and the site usually receives about 60 000 visitors during the morning.

"We are busy with a R1 million publicity and advertising campaign that may have been negated now as users have been unable to access our site today," he says.

Buwalda says it also seems IS`s redundancy plan was compromised by Telkom dragging its heels over installing a 1GB line between Rosebank and Bryanston.

Swart says IS sent a letter to Telkom last week requesting the 1GB line and was told it would only get an answer on Wednesday.

"If we had the 1GB line, our redundancy plan would have coped with the loss of the microwave link," he says.
