Consumers with hi-tech gadgetry on their Christmas lists have been invited to take part in a online auction that will raise money for the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa).

Several companies have donated IT equipment to the worthy cause, says auction organiser and PC Format editor Tamsin McKay. "Microsoft, HP, Lexmark, Intel and a host of other companies have all made donations."

Rectron was the largest contributor, donating 25 products to the auction, which will take place between 6 and 11 December.

The total value of the goods is estimated at around R200 000, says McKay.

Equipment on offer will include cameras, a gaming pack from WWE, projectors, scanners and printers, and Microsoft packs, packaged for the consumer.

Bid or Buy has agreed to set up the auction, handle the credit card payments and courier the products to the winning bidders for free, says McKay.

Mark Shuttleworth will also be up for auction, albeit only for a short period, with the highest bidder getting to spend time with the country`s first 'Afronaut`.

While it is uncertain how much money the auction will raise, McKay says it should be a fairly respectable sum. "We are hoping to raise around R100 000, which should be a realistic target." The money will be handed over to Cansa in early January.
