IT gets arty

IT experts and journalists at the Progress User Conference in Pilanesburg tried their hand at art this week, with the aim of raising money for charity.

The artworks were then auctioned off on the final evening of the conference, held at the Kwa Maritane game lodge, on Wednesday.

By the end of the evening, the auction had raised R50 000 for Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit, non-denominational Christian housing organisation that builds affordable houses for the disadvantaged. The auction was officiated by MIP Holdings CEO Richard Firth.

Of the six paintings created, the highest bid received was for R4 000. The total paid for all the paintings was R14 000. A number of donations from the IT community were also made to the charity.

Paintings were designed with the theme of progress in mind, and participants were advised by a group of artists residing in the area. Some of the paintings bordered on the bizarre, with the artists incorporating soft drink cans, bubble wrap and even half a pineapple into their works of art.

The tin can/pineapple creation raised the lowest sum of money.
