The world today is increasingly becoming more fluid, with the rigid infrastructures melting away to form a dynamic shape-shifting environment.
This is according to Pat Gelsinger, CEO of VMware, delivering the keynote speech at the VMworld 2014 conference in Barcelona.
According to Gelsinger, it's a brave new world that has led to new business models and touches every industry vertical. This is both a challenge and a risk, he added.
"Work is no longer about a physical location but what you do; governments are required to be increasingly transparent and visible - creating a brave new world of IT."
Gelsinger pointed out that perpetuating the status quo is a risk to the future success of businesses.
"Successful business leaders recognise that technology disruption is inevitable; therefore, to be successful in today's dynamic and liquid world, they need to be innovators and inventors rather than followers."
Companies need leaders that are thoughtful, decisive and risk-takers, said Gelsinger. "It's not about taking foolish risks but well-executed risk - enabling the business to make solid decisions that can propel them forward."
According to Gelsinger, VMware's job is to enable businesses to adapt to the "brave new IT world" and help them navigate the uncertain future.
VMware, with its three pillars strategy - software-defined data centre, end-user computing and hybrid cloud computing - has created a means to help business today and into the future, said Gelsinger.
VMware discovered one key challenge faced by business is 'siloed' infrastructure, which, he noted, is a hindrance to organisations in today's highly competitive and ever-changing IT environment.
"One of the main problems business face is siloes that are holding back progress - creating an environment where business has to choose whether its infrastructure should be on or off premises, and safe, secure and compliant, or agile, scalable and dynamic.
"Fundamentally, VMware's approach is to empower companies to bridge the divide, conquer the siloes and break barriers. This will help companies move from the tyranny of having to choose between private and public cloud - moving towards hybrid computing."
The business world needs IT solutions that are fluid and are ready to meet business demands, and also applications that are ready to be provisioned instantly and are secure, he concluded.
