Joburg ANC tweet alleges Zuma's imminent recall

Johannesburg, 15 Dec 2015

Update

At a press briefing, held at Luthuli House at 1pm, the ANC discussed recent fall-out over the reshuffling of the post of finance minister three times in one week and reported back on the meetings held by its National Working Committee (NWC) over the weekend. ANC spokesman Zizi Kodwa referred to allegations that President Jacob Zuma had been recalled as a 'hoax' and told reporters that party leadership had not discussed the president being recalled.

The Johannesburg ANC's Twitter account has alleged that President Jacob Zuma has been recalled and will be stepping down as leader of the country.

@ANCJHB tweeted just before 12pm today: "ANNOUNCEMENT OF RECALL OF THE PRESIDENT OF SOUTH AFRICA".

The tweet was followed by another that read: "The ANC NEC met in the early hours of today to consider serious matters of in the Republic", while a further tweet read: "The gravity of the crisis would not allow us to wait for daybreak. It is within this context that we convened this Emergency NEC meeting."

"We took the painful decision to recall the ANC Pres from his position as the Head of State and President of the Republic of South Africa," another tweet read. This was followed by another that says: "The Deputy President will in terms of the Constitution assume the position of the Acting President until a formal announcement".

The Johannesburg ANC's twitter account earlier today announced that President Jacob Zuma has been recalled from his post, but swiftly removed the tweets and alleged its account had been hacked.
The Johannesburg ANC's twitter account earlier today announced that President Jacob Zuma has been recalled from his post, but swiftly removed the tweets and alleged its account had been hacked.

The tweets were swiftly deleted and replaced with a tweet reading: "We note that someone has hacked into our account and posted that the President has been recalled. it's not true".

This was followed by: "We have noted with deep concern of the RT's on the false statements on the removal of the Pres..it is not true..our account was hacked".

Media have been informed that there will be a press briefing at ANC headquarters, Luthuli House, in Johannesburg at 1pm, where more clarity on the situation is expected.

The alleged news comes as the country gears up for anti-Zuma marches in cities across the country tomorrow under the banner #ZumaMustFall.

Last week, the president decided to remove Finance Minnister Nhlanhla Nene from his post and replaced him with largely unknown MP David van Rooyen.

The decision sent the rand plummeting, reaching nearly R16 to the dollar and R23 to the pound.

On Sunday night, Zuma rearranged the finance ministry yet again by reinstating former finance minister Pravin Gordhan and redeploying van Rooyen to minister Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
