JSE-listed construction firm Murray & Roberts Holdings says non-executive director Alan Knott-Craig Snr has resigned with “immediate effect”.
In a statement to shareholders yesterday, the company said Knott-Craig had resigned “due to other business commitments”, without elaborating.
Knott-Craig, who was Vodacom's first CEO, last year confirmed to ITWeb that he was in tentative talks with several telecoms companies, including Cell C. His resignation followed rumours that he may be appointed as CEO.
Cell C has been without a CEO since Lars Reichelt left the company, suddenly, in the middle of July. Chairman Simon Duffy has been acting in the position since then, and previously indicated the company may go global in its search for a new CEO.
Knott-Craig said he was in tentative discussions with “a few” companies, including Cell C. However, at the beginning of December, there was nothing firm on the table.
Vodacom's former CEO is restrained from working for any company in the ICT industry until the end of March next year. This forms part of a deal between him and Vodacom to continue to render services for two years after stepping down from the company.
Murray & Roberts said Knott-Craig also resigned as a member of its audit and sustainability committee and had previously resigned from the health, safety and environment committee.
The construction company wished Knott-Craig well in his future endeavours and thanked him for his contribution over the past three years. He was appointed to the board in 2008.
