Linux cluster from Oracle

Oracle threw more of its considerable weight behind Linux at LinuxWorld this week with the release - for the first time - of source code for a new cluster file system on Linux. The code was immediately released into the Oracle Technology Network online community. The new cluster file system is designed to simplify the management of Oracle91 Real Application Clusters. The code is released under the General Public Licence, the licence governing most of the open source software available today. Alan Cox, second in command to Linus Torvalds and maintainer of much of the Linux kernel code, was on hand to welcome the release, saying that the move was significant in accelerating the development of enterprise-class clustering technologies in the Linux Kernel.

Online PS2 confirmed

PlayStation 2 is going online by the end of the month. Sony yesterday announced that its online version of the popular gaming console will be launched on 27 August in the US. The online foray will apparently coincide with the release of the PS2 network adapter and some of the first game titles to support online playing. More importantly the move will give the company more than a two-month head start on Microsoft`s Xbox Live service. According to TheRegister, the online plans revolve around the network adapter which offers both Ethernet and modem connectivity. Also, unlike Xbox Live, there is no annual subscription fee. Dell Linux

Dell continues its on-off flirtation with Linux with another announcement from LinuxWorld in which the company says it will work with RedHat to deliver professional services designed to help enterprise Unix users migrate to the Linux operating system. The two companies will apparently offer "migration planning and management services". More specifically, they will offer assessment, planning and proof of concept, application porting and implementation services. The companies also recently teamed up with Oracle to provide support and services for RedHat Linux Advanced Server and Oracle`s 9i release 2 database management system running on Dell hardware.
