Archos, a designer and manufacturer of miniature peripherals, has added wireless Internet connectivity and a new Linux platform to its latest pocket video recorder that debuts locally this month.
"The Pocket Media Assistant (PMA) 400 consolidates portable video, music, photo and gaming functionality into a single pocket-sized device," says Greg Dresser, MD of Alphaprod, the South African distributor for Archos.
"Consumers are showing a great thirst for devices that store all of their media in one place for anywhere access, but now they can use the same device to stay connected to the Internet and catch up on their e-mail," adds Dresser.
The new Linux platform allows for customised applications to be developed for the PMA 400. Dresser says a complete software development kit will be made available on the Archos Web site as well as a dedicated Web site.
The PMA 400 comes equipped with a 30GB Hitachi hard drive, giving it the capacity to store 120 hours of TV content, 60 full-length movies in MPEG-4 SP format, 6 500 songs, or 300 000 photographs.
The PMA 400 also has the ability to act as a USB host for attaching storage and peripherals such as digital cameras, keyboards, hard drives and other portable devices.
