The MTN Business App of the Year Award went to two-time winner for the evening, LIVE Inspect, which bagged a R200k cheque to go with the accolade.
The app is designed to help improve the accuracy and ease of performing inspections on behalf of insurers. It helps assessors or inspectors capture and report on the details of the vehicles - including condition, time, date and location of inspection, as well as details of who presents the vehicle for inspection. It includes licence disc scanning, driver's licence scanning and data verification, drawing from Lightstone's various automotive data sets.
Speaking at the App of the Year Awards 2014 held at The Venue, Melrose Arch last night, Kanagaratnam Lambotharan, MTN Business CEO, emphasised how mobile applications have become essential to the digital way of life, not only in SA but the rest of the continent too.
"MTN believes that there is a big digital future and we've invested significantly outside our core business - which is mobile - and a lot of that is going into creating a digital lifestyle."
He mentioned that MTN has changed its vision to become the driver of the digital world to all its customers, and that the key part of that is mobile application. What is seen here is that grass-root development on a shoestring budget can be as effective and innovative as a corporate with multi-million backing.
This is seen in the number of applications that have been entered into this year's award.
"The quality of the apps was truly amazing; I was very impressed that we have such incredible talent in this country. I found the apps really useful this year - stuff that I could use continuously. So the quality of the apps was of a high standard," said Aki Anastasiou, one of the judges and the host of Technobyte on Talk Radio 702.
"In terms of the quality of the apps, this year it was a lot harder to decide on which were the winners. Last year and the year before it was easier as there were some that stood above the rest, whereas this time there was more debate in each category as to which one we felt should win," said Kojo Baffoe, also a judge of the awards and the editor of Destiny Man.
