SAP social media analytics by Netbase will be showcased at the software corporation's Saphila conference, taking place at Sun City at the end of the month.

The solution gauges the net sentiment about a specific topic mentioned on social media sites using neuro-linguistic programming. This gives an organisation insight into what its customers are thinking. "I would regard social media as another form of intelligence," says Kamil Kara, pre-sales specialist at SAP.

SAP's social media analytics software was used during the recent Saphila "tweet-up", which highlighted some of the themes of the upcoming conference, as well as the technologies that will be showcased and the training sessions taking place at the event.

"This was set up for our tweet-up last week to pull any mention of Saphila, and as the tweet-up was happening, we were able to track it on Twitter and we could answer the questions accordingly," says Kara. The technology is able to determine the top emotions people have about a topic, as well as their likes and dislikes. It also tracks the most prominent authors and offers a ranking of these social media users based on their klout scores.

According to Kara, the benefit of this kind of tool is that it allows companies to know what their customers are talking about and what they are thinking based on their social media usage. "You are the complaints and the issues, and even the positives, and you are applying them to your business model. It is not just graphs, pictures and big words; this technology takes business intelligence and actually does something with it and can be used to make better decisions around your business," says Kara.

There will be four dedicated screens at Saphila displaying this analytics technology. "While people are tweeting, you will be able to see what people are saying about the event," Kara says.
