E-learning has grown significantly in SA in the past few years, ongoing research by Harvard Business School Publishing (HBSP) indicates.
HBSP is a non-profit organisation that supplies Web-based solutions that train managers and leaders in soft skills.
"Our mission is to improve the practise of management. To take content and reach managers everywhere," explains Perry Bedinger, director of international accounts and distribution for HBSP.
The organisation has partners all over the world and is locally affiliated with learning resources company LR Group. Bedinger explains that HBSP received feedback from its partnerships about customers and uses the information for research purposes.
"The pick-up in SA has been phenomenal," says Bedinger. "There has been about a 25% increase in the uptake of e-learning in the last year alone."
Linda van der Loo, managing executive of Learning Solutions within holding company LR Group, explains there are four resellers in SA and 12 in other African countries.
Although there is great interest in Africa for e-learning, there are many challenges, including the lack of technological infrastructure needed to support Web-based learning, Bedinger explains.
Van der Loo says although IT desktop and business development courses are still the most popular locally, interest in strategy, creativity and especially innovation courses is growing.
"We are also providing courses on iPods and cellphones now," she adds.
