The Technology in Local Government Conference, being held on 20 and 21 June at Gallagher Estate, Midrand, will focus on improving delivery though technology.

The conference, hosted by ITWeb, is endorsed by the State IT Agency and boasts speakers with broad knowledge of effective technology for local government, says Thembelani Tukwayo, ITWeb`s programme manager.

These include Romi Barjaktarevic, of the South African government; Gwede Mantashe, chairperson of the Joint Initiative on Priority Skills Acquisition; Nirvesh Sooful, CIO of the City of Cape Town; and Charles Kuun, manager of Tshwane Hub.

Keynote speaker Hon Mninwa Mahlangu, chairman of the National Council of Provinces (NCP), will give an address titled "Strengthening democracy through effective local government". The use of technology can assist in ensuring local government becomes an effective and efficient institution, which is in line with Parliament`s vision of a government responsive to people`s needs, the NCP says.

Mahlangu is on record as supporting a move to focus on ensuring local government is capacitated to deliver services effectively and efficiently.

Dr Raven Naidoo, CEO of Radian, will discuss smart cities. Naidoo believes more and more cities are developing strategies to include the use of ICT for efficiency and better communication. Cities are also geared for bringing about social and economic development through ICT and making low-cost telecommunications networks more accessible.

"Tshwane and Johannesburg are smart cities," he said. "Durban has very recently been awarded a tender to become one, and Cape Town has applied as well."
