An online user group has been formed to help local Internet entrepreneurs share knowledge and seek mentorship.
Software developer Arno Nel formed the South African Web Entrepreneur User Group some weeks ago, "to bring together a diversity of multi-skilled people with one common thread - the desire to network, share, innovate and seek mentorship regarding Web-based entrepreneurship in the South African marketplace".
Nel started the group because he was frustrated at "hearing much talk but seeing little action" in the entrepreneurial marketplace online.
The user group, now with just under 100 members, invites members to post articles, comments and ideas and open them up to group discussion. One idea that was posted and picked up on by some of the members is now under development, Nel says.
He has also approached a number of businesses and small business development organisations with a view to arranging mentorships and sponsorships. Nel says all membership applications are screened to ensure only serious participants, and every attempt is being made to include a good mix of skills - from "techies" to legal and financial experts.
Nel says he sees a bright future for Web entrepreneurs in SA, but that starting out as an individual is extremely difficult. "With the support of a network of like-minded people, entrepreneurs can make their visions into reality."
