Locate your balls

Golfers may soon be able to find out exactly how far they have driven off the tee, or how high they have hit a nine-iron, thanks to a technology that stores information on a chip inside the ball, says Times Online.

The chip, which is less than half the size of a phone's SIM card, works by using satellite technology to measure the exact location of the ball across a given time, including where it has been hit, but also its altitude and speed.

It uses the same GPS technology that is built into the most advanced phones, but because it does not have to process the information immediately, it can be much smaller, and cheaper.

CBS buys CNet

CBS will acquire CNet Networks, an online provider of technology news and product reviews, for $1.8 billion cash, as the TV broadcasting giant took another step to use the Internet to rev up its growth, says MarketWatch.

CBS said it would pay $11.50 a share, a 45% premium to where CNet shares traded before the deal was announced.

Ireland gets new Bill

The Irish government has published a new Broadcasting Bill designed to consolidate 50 years of broadcasting legislation and repeal key Acts that date back to 1960, says Broadband TV News.

The Bill will consolidate the roles of the BCI and the BCC into a single content regulator, the established Broadcasting Authority of Ireland.

There will also be two new public service broadcasters, an Irish Film Channel and Oireachtas (the Irish Parliament) channel.
