Maxxor recently collaborated with New Media Publishing and Vodacom to develop a rugby statistics app that has raced to the top of the app store charts. The Vodacom Rugby Stats app challenges the rugby-loving public to get to know their rugby facts, providing team and player statistics such as who has made (or missed) the most tackles or which team wins the most line-outs.
One of South Africa's leading cellular network providers, Vodacom, is a loyal supporter of South African sports, and has sponsored teams like the Blue Bulls and Kaizer Chiefs for years. New Media Publishing focuses on creating content in both print and digital media formats, and knows exactly how to create valuable brand engagement.
New Media Publishing approached Vodacom with the idea for the app, and given Vodacom's extensive involvement with sports teams in South Africa, it knew that rugby fans would love to be more hands-on with their favourite sport. The two companies discussed developing the idea even more, a plan of action was decided upon, and Maxxor was tasked with bringing the app to life.
Ami Kapilevich of New Media Publishing, who came up with the concept and design for the app, explains the motivation behind it: "There were many sports-related apps in app stores, but none of them provided specific real-time statistics for SA Rugby. We saw an opportunity, and our team decided to develop an app that would allow fans to follow matches more closely. This app needed to provide a more in-depth perspective and give fans the chance to discuss developments while the game is still in motion."
Adrian Frielinghaus, Director of Product Development at Maxxor, was involved with the Vodacom Rugby Stats app from its inception, and says: "When New Media Publishing approached us, we knew that they had a great idea, and we jumped at the chance to make it a reality. Many members of our team love the game of rugby, so they knew what die-hard fans would like to see in an app."
Frielinghaus continues: "We wanted to create an app that was easy to use and accessible at any time during a game. The interface needed to be uncluttered because of the large amount of information it was going to present to the user. We gave a lot of attention to the statistics themselves, ensuring that what was going to appear in the app was always up to date and relevant to the games being played."
The app has been made available for download to Android, iOS and BlackBerry 10 users. It was published on 6 March and already ranks as one of the top five sports apps in all three app stores.
