The second bi-annual cricket clash between MIP Wanderers and the Media has seen the latter snatch a two-run victory in a tightly contested battle at The Oval on The Campus in Bryanston. Hosted by MIP Holdings, the game resulted in victory by two runs.
MIP Wanderers won the previous game, held at the same venue in March.
In the hotly contested 25-over-a-side match, the Media successfully prevented MIP Wanderers from passing their first innings total of 240, after Frank Heydenrych, Media captain and executive chairman of Predictive Communications, won the toss and opted to bat first.
"We entered this match with a desire to set the record straight, to show MIP Wanderers that the Media are a cricketing force to be reckoned with," Heydenrych says. "Both teams were a little underdone in the first match. This time we had a simple plan: to score more runs than before; rotate our bowlers to allow them recovery time; and fielding second so as to beat some of the heat."
The Media`s Deon Botes, sales and marketing director of PayCell in his day-time career, was awarded Man of the Match for his 115 runs, the highest scored of the day. The Media`s Nestus Bredenhann was Man of the Match in the previous contest.
Extras came in with 50, courtesy of wides conceded by MIP Wanderers, while the Media gifted their opponents with an additional 40, also mainly from wides.
Despite having to chase down more than 10 runs an over in the last seven overs, MIP Wanderers came very close; needing 21 off the last over, they could score just 18. AutoMate MD Michael Botha, captain of MIP Wanderers, blitzed 35 off 12 balls towards the end, but fell just short of scoring the winning runs.
"Being out on the cricket field, on a perfect South African summer`s afternoon, vying for supremacy in the true gentlemen`s game has a way of bringing people closer, improving communication," says Richard Firth, CEO of MIP. "Relationship building is an integral part of any business. Coming together on a cricket field in friendly competition is an excellent way to build and strengthen relationships with business partners and customers alike."
MIP Wanderers was made up of players from MIP, AutoMate Dealer Management Systems, associated companies and Smollan Holdings. The Media team consisted of players from ITWeb, Predictive Communications, Business Day, PayCell and several freelance consultancies. Don Elliott, sales director at MIP, was the official umpire.
