MS AV details leaked

A Microsoft executive in France has leaked details of the software maker`s plans for anti-virus software, reports ZDNet.

The site says a standalone anti-virus product is to be built from tools the company inherited through its 2003 acquisitions of GeCad and Pelican Software.

It will use two different means of detecting destructive files, the first of which will reference a regularly updated list of known viruses to check for potential infections. The second anti-virus tool will analyse computer systems to assess whether they have been hit by a virus in the past and attempt to give end-users an idea of future .

The executive indicated that the anti-virus package will not come with firewall software but said a firewall would be built into the company`s Windows XP operating system when it delivers its Service Pack 2 update.

The product would work with both Windows XP and the Longhorn release of Windows.

kids by phone

Parents in South Korea will now be able to track their children by using a device in a new mobile phone that has been designed for kids, reports Reuters.

SK Telecom has begun selling colourful cellphones with antennas that look like human ears and a built-in tracker using the global positioning satellite (GPS) network.

The phone, priced at around $86, has four buttons to save phone numbers of key contacts, such as Mom and Dad. The GPS technology works even when the phone is turned off.

To keep the price down, the phones do not have text messaging or Internet capabilities.

Apple the MS of music?

Merrill Lynch analyst Steven Milunovich says the alliance between Apple and Motorola announced this week could turn Apple into the "Microsoft of music" and make the iPod the "de facto standard in digital music".

Newsfactor quotes Milunovich as saying the Motorola alliance is a "net positive for the iPod".

The deal involves Apple creating an iTunes mobile music player for the world`s number two cellphone maker, which Motorola will adopt as the music application for mass-market music phones that are expected in the first half of 2005.
