MySQL appoints distributor

A growing loyal local client base has forced MySQL, arguably the world's most popular open source database software with over 100 million downloads made throughout its history, to invade local shores by appointing a local distributor which will also act as the authorised Philippine MySQL education centre, says MB.com.

Larry Stefonic, senior VP Asia Pacific, MySQL, who recently graced the formal announcement of Touch Solutions as its Philippine distributor, said in an interview that the increasing popularity of open source software in the country has brought attention to MySQL as an important component of the IT systems of companies.

"The first wave of adoption has been with Linux at the level operating system. The second wave is now with MySQL at the database level," said Stefonic, who's currently based in Tokyo, Japan.

Funambol, a provider of Mobile 2.0 messaging software powered by open source, says the AGPLv3 has received formal approval by the Open Source Initiative (OSI), reports Earth Times.

Funambol led the process of the licence's approval by the OSI after adopting AGPLv3 in November. It was the first company to adopt the licence, which closes the "ASP loophole".

The AGPLv3 was released by the Free Software Foundation last June as an addition to the General Public Licence, which is the world's most popular free licence and accounts for almost three-quarters of all licensing of free software packages.

Tech gurus, break out the mice and keyboards, because San Antonio College's computer information systems department will host the spring 2008 Open Source Fest during spring break, reports The Ranger.

Collaborating with San Antonio Linux User's Group and X-otic Computer Systems of San Antonio, the computer information system department is hosting the event celebrating computing technologies.

The term "open source" is a set of principles and practices on how to write software. The most important use is the original source code is openly available.
