Sanral CEO Nazir Alli has withdrawn his resignation, confirms the Department of Transport.
This is after the board accepted his resignation earlier this month.
Sanral chairperson Tembakazi Mnyaka on 8 May announced the board resolved to accept Alli's resignation and added that he would continue his post until 3 June.
No problem
However, at a press briefing this morning, deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe said there is no search for a new CEO.
Transport minister Sibusiso Ndebele said government is not looking for a scapegoat and so there is no matter with Alli.
The Department of Transport says Alli was requested to withdraw his resignation in the interest of continuity at Sanral, particularly on issues related to the implementation of e-tolling.
"We believe that the Sanral CEO has the necessary institutional memory to help us with the repositioning of Sanral."
Sanral contribution
Alli's resignation came amid a highly-contentious time for Sanral, as its Gauteng e-tolling system is being aggressively challenged and rejected by the public.
“As announced in recent weeks, processes have been initiated at national government level to address the variety of issues involved in the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project and e-tolling. The board will ensure that Sanral contributes to and cooperates with the deliberations now under way,” says Mnyaka.
The system has been put on hold, following a North Gauteng High Court decision with regards to an application for an interdict against the controversial system.
