RS Components (RS) has introduced an app that provides electronics design engineers, developers and students with a single point of access to electronic reference materials and products.

The new DesignSpark Toolbox, available on iOS, Android and Windows devices, offers a range of functions, including engineering calculation and conversion tools, and lookup tables for battery types, and technical documents.

These functions, according to the industrial electronics firm, consist of filter frequency calculators, a timer configurator, calculators for a variety of voltage regulators, and essential tools such as numbering systems converters, and an Ohm's Law calculator, which calculates power, current, voltage or resistance.

Developed in collaboration with Marcus Roskosch, creator of a range of apps for engineers, the new app replaces the previous RS Toolbox app, which was only available on iOS and Windows PCs.

"This app places a vast amount of component and online calculations at the fingertips of engineers, students and makers, enabling them to exploit creativity and innovation," says Mike Bray, VP of DesignSpark at RS.

"It is yet another example of our mission at DesignSpark to deliver free, high-performance tools that make the design process faster, easier and more affordable."

"The 'make' section is an addition to the new version of the app and offers users a place to keep track of projects on the go with sections to store Web site links, images, technical documents and more," explains Mellisa Naidoo, marketing director at RS Components SA.

"Furthermore, the DesignSpark Marketplace has been added to the app and enables makers, pro-makers, start-ups and small businesses to promote and sell their own inventions and product creations to a wide audience of fellow makers and engineers, including more than 650 000 members of the RS DesignSpark engineering and maker online community."

RS says it listened to feedback from its members with regards to the previous app, and in particular, their desire for an Android version and improved functionality.

There are multitudes of apps available in the market that enable engineers to perform various tasks and provide access to online tools.

These include Engineering Unit Converter; the Fluid Mechanics Converter, a conversion calculator that can translate different units of measure related to fluid mechanics; and Mechanical Engineering 101, an on-the-go learning app that helps users to understand the basics of mechanical engineering.
