New-generation Huawei access router launched

Johannesburg, 25 Nov 2002

Duxbury Networking has released the Quidway R1760 router from Huawei Technologies. It is a modular access platform designed for larger branch or regional office applications that require data/voice/fax transmissions.

Key features of the router include preloaded software for voice (VOFR and VOIP), security and quality of service functions, together with configuration flexibility and manageability.

The R1760, which is compatible with Huawei`s R2600E router series, is targeted at evolving e-business needs where high-speed broadband Internet connectivity and comprehensive security are required.

According to Graham Vorster, chief technology officer at Duxbury Networking, the router brings a new level of price performance to this sector of the router market, retailing at around 30% less than its nearest competitors.

Other features of the R1760 router include a packet forwarding rate of 32kpps, a high speed microprocessor, support for terminal server applications, SNA/DLSW, the IP multicast protocol and PPPoE.

With SNA/DLSW support, the router implements WAN-bridging functionality and interconnection between LANs and SDLCs.

The router`s modularity allows the addition of numerous optional Smart Interface Cards (SICs) and Multifunction Interface Modules (MIMs) as required.

To meet the needs for broadband access, the router features dial-on-demand routing (DDR) and provides up to three 10/100Mbps self-adapting Ethernet ports.

From a quality of service perspective, the router supports traffic classification and traffic policing, providing policies such as congestion management, congestion avoidance and traffic shaping.

In addition to the backup solution included in the router, data security and reliability features include the support of PAP, CHAP, RADIUS, VOIP RADIUS, authorisation and accounting for VOIP services, as well as VPN, IPSec and IKE firewalls.
