UUNet SA has appointed Bheki Nkomo as MD, filling a position that has been vacant for over a year.
An e-mail sent this week by Carl Roberts, MCI`s chief of staff for its EMEA region, says Nkomo`s appointment was effective from 1 November.
Dave Meintjies was UUNet SA`s previous MD. Meintjies left in October 2003 and Roberts has since controlled the operation remotely from his base in France.
Nkomo is a British-trained electronic engineer and has worked for British Telecom, Motorola, and British Telephone Systems. He has consulted to various black empowerment companies in SA and in 1999 joined PQ Africa/Comparex, as business development manager for Africa.
In 2001, Nkomo was appointed to arivia.kom where he held the position of strategic marketing executive, public sector, and the following year was appointed managing executive for Africa.
"Bheki`s appointment to UUNet SA comes at a time when the company is fast moving its strategy to provide converged network solutions, now including the provision of voice over IP. We believe that together with the strong executive team we currently have in place and the leadership of Bheki Nkomo, UUNet will gain significant strides in leading industries towards total IP communications solutions throughout Africa and beyond," reads Roberts` message.
Nkomo will be based at UUNet SA`s Johannesburg office and will spend the next few weeks meeting with customers and staff.
M-Web, the country`s largest Internet service provider, recently switched its allegiance to Internet Solutions, UUNet`s largest competitor, and one of the factors cited was the lack of a local MD.
