New one-stop governance Web site

IT knowledge organisation IT has created an online site that draws compliance resources together in a single 'go to' place, according to PR Web.

The site is in response to companies' and individuals' increasing need for appropriate qualifications in IT security and compliance issues as a result of regulatory pressures. The new IT Infosec Qualifications Centre gives a complete listing and explanation of all major information security qualifications.

The centre also provides access to IT Governance's range of classroom training courses.

People, processes vital to information security

The US government is having more success with the correct people and processes than technology in securing information, reports Government Technology.

A recent report by global analyst firm IDC, entitled the 'Global Information Security Workforce Study', found the US government's efforts to improve its overall security through compliance with stringent information security mandates is increasing the professionalism and preparedness of its information security workforce.

The study found public sector compliance mandates and concern over the large number of recent high-profile security breaches are driving agencies to invest nearly half of their information security budgets on personnel-specialised training and certifications.

Contract employees raise challenges

A trend towards contract IT staff working alongside permanent staff in government organisations, has become a concern for CIOs, reports FCW.

Such work arrangements among information technology employees can be complex and often require extra attention and oversight, according to management experts advising senior executives on workplace issues.

"It's really good to have the industry guys involved because you get real-world requirements from them," said Douglas Maughan, a DHS programme manager. "That doesn't always happen if it's just the government or research community." But creating a cohesive team from two different sides is a major challenge, he said. Policies clash, and managers must navigate through the points of friction.
