A Johannesburg-based development company is preparing to launch a new South African search engine, which it promises will be fast and user-friendly.
The new search engine, SusySearch.com, has around 35 000 sites indexed and will launch once it has over 100 000 sites indexed, probably by July. The developer, Development Collective, says Susy runs on open source software and will not make use of graphics, banner advertising and pop-ups, so making it faster and more effective. The three-month-old company decided to launch the site because it felt there was a gap in the market for a fast and simple search engine with a local slant.
"We have been testing Susy for the past month, and are currently perfecting the search algorithm," says Development Collective marketing director Okkert Greeff. "We`re looking at a Google-type model, but it will be more keyword-specific. The more prominently and frequently the keyword is placed on a Web page, the higher up on the search it will be rated."
Webmasters and Internet users are invited to submit sites to Susy for free inclusion in the database. Once the URL has been supplied, Susy will crawl the site and extract the first level information needed. Sites can be submitted at www.susysearch.com.
