The National Research Foundation (NRF) regards biotechnology as one of the key areas to stimulate SA`s industry and global competitiveness. This is why the NRF has invested close to R180 million in the industry in only three years.
The NRF has increased its investment in biotechnology by 50% - from about R50 million per year in 2001, to more than R75 million per year for 2003.
The growth of its investment in biotechnology reflects in programmes such as the Technology and Human Resources for Industry Programme, which has increased biotechnology funding from R19.2 million in 2001 to R32 million in 2003.
At the same time, funding for biotechnology research in focus area programmes has increased from R5.3 million to R8.8 million per year.
Also, Innovation Fund investments in biotechnology have increased from around R25 million to almost R32 million, with support for biotechnology students increasing from R1.35 million to nearly R3 million.
The NRF`s role in creating new knowledge and developing new skills in the field of biotechnology will be showcased at the Blue IQ Smart Industry Expo, taking place from 22 to 24 October, at the Sandton Convention Centre.
The NRF`s stand will also focus on the aspect of public understanding of biotechnology and how the NRF`s outreach arm, the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement, is creating opportunities for public dialogue and debate about biotechnology and its applications in society.
