Online home of SMEs launched

Inzuzo, Intekom`s portal targeting the small and medium enterprise (SME) sector, was officially launched at the Wanderers Club last night. The company reports that over 10 000 companies have registered on the site since it went live six weeks ago.

Ashiek Manie, Intekom`s deputy MD, explained this change in focus for Intekom: "The market is becoming crowded. Everyone`s targeting the same corporate sector where the money is. Intekom`s is to focus deliberately on this untapped market which is ready to move - all it needs is the trigger."

The portal provides a free interactive Web presence to small, micro and macro enterprises. It will soon see the introduction of several vertical communities where businesses can share ideas, exchange value and establish partnerships that will enhance their business leverage, Manie said.

One of the key issues affecting the uptake of technology by the SME sector, said Manie, was that of infrastructure. He suggested that a possible solution would be to make use of the existing infrastructure laid down at the computer centres of various schools and community organisations around the country.

In her keynote address, Thenjiwe Hlatshwako, head of Finance and Economic Affairs for Gauteng, said that as provincial government, her department`s responsibility was to ensure that SMEs not only survived, but also prospered, and that Inzuzo was just one way to achieve this goal.
