SA-based OpenLab International has introduced an ultra-light version of its Linux distribution that is designed to run on a range of computer technology.
The basic installation of OpenLab4 provides a range of relevant productivity applications, but unlike previous versions has been stripped of all unnecessary functionality to ensure it will run on any computer, explains Denis Brandjes, MD of OpenLab International.
"OpenLab4 Linux distribution gives a new lease on life to older PCs, enabling schools and community facilities with limited resources to bridge the digital divide," he says.
The basic installation disk enables users to run the operating system from CD. "This means potential users can try the system before installing it, using the same disk."
Desktop add-ons, server functionality, language packs and games are available on an additional two CDs.
OpenLab solutions are distributed online, or through appointed partners. These include Olamandla Technologies in SA and SchoolNet Namibia.
OpenLab has been implemented in over 500 sites throughout Africa, Brandjes says, with over 3 500 downloads recorded since April 2004.
